What does "no sign up" actually get you?

It gets you past the email box. That's genuinely worth something — the moment a site wants an address before it shows you anything, you've been converted into a lead before you've decided whether you like the thing.

But three different promises get folded into one phrase, and only the first is common. No account to start is normal. No account ever is rarer. No account, ever, with no limit is close to nonexistent, because a platform that has no idea who you are still pays for every reply it generates. Somebody is metering you. The only real question is how.

The door being open doesn't mean the room is free.

Where does a guest transcript actually live?

If there's no account, there's no row anywhere with your name on it. The conversation still has to sit somewhere, and the only place left is your own browser.

Here's ours, specifically. An anonymous SlowSin scene is written to your browser's localStorage under one key per scene, holding the last 100 messages. Nothing about it reaches a server that could hand it back to you later, on any device. If the browser refuses the write — a private window, a full storage quota — the chat simply resets next visit.

That matters more than it sounds, because the transcript is the memory. A language model doesn't remember anything between turns; the whole conversation is re-sent and re-read from scratch every time you hit send. Anthropic's documentation describes each turn's input phase as containing all previous conversation history plus your current message. So whoever stores that history owns your continuity, and in guest mode you handed the job to a browser cache. We took the mechanics apart in why characters forget.

Your browser is not a backup.

How does a free app count your messages without an account?

There are only three ways to do it, and each leaks something different.

• A counter in your own browser. Honest, trivially resettable, and therefore closer to a suggestion than a limit.
• Your network address. Not resettable by you, and shared with everyone else on the connection.
• Device fingerprinting — screen size, fonts, timing quirks. The most durable of the three, and the most invasive, because the entire point is recognising you after you asked not to be recognised.

Ours is the second one. The preview meter hashes your IP with a secret salt and counts replies against that hash across every scene, not per scene. Which means: clearing cookies won't reset it, a private window won't either, and a household or an office behind one address shares a single allowance. That's a worse experience than a browser counter in every way except one, and we run it anyway, because the option that works better is the option that studies your device.

We took the bluntest instrument on purpose.

Worth saying plainly, since the two get confused: guest mode is not a moderation loophole. On our side the prohibited-category check runs on your message before any model call at all, account or no account. Anonymity changes what a platform knows about you. It doesn't change what it will play along with.

What should you check before trusting any guest mode?

Four questions. They work on us too.

1. How many messages, and counted how? The number is half the answer. Counted in your browser, at your address, or against your device changes what "reset" even means.
2. Where does the history live? If the answer is your browser, treat every scene as disposable and don't get attached to one.
3. Does signing up carry the guest chat across, or drop it? Nobody advertises this, and it's the one that costs people real work. Ours drops it, which is why it's written out above rather than buried.
4. What does the signup actually want? Email is the right answer. A phone number is a permanent real-world identifier being collected for a chat site — ask why.

One caveat that applies to every article on this query, including the ones ranking above this one: guest caps and signup requirements in this category change without announcement, and a listicle dated this year is often quoting last year's limits. Verify against the platform itself, on the day.
